ABSTRACT The objective of the study was to assess the farm level economic implications of value-adding genetic selection strategies to improve milk fat composition. Selection based on a quantitative trait (ratio of total saturated to total unsaturated fatty acids in milk) or a known genotype (for the DGAT1 gene) was considered. Technical and economic performance of hypothetical herds were computed by a herd optimization and simulation model. It was assumed that the herds are already bred for the specific milk composition, and the transition period was not considered. Correlated effects of the selection scenarios on milk production, female fertility, and functional longevity traits were accounted for. Results showed that increasing the total unsaturated fatty acids in milk by traditional selection leads to lower net revenue, whereas selection based on DGAT1 genotype results in slightly higher net revenue. Our results, therefore, suggest that genetic selection based on DGAT1 genotype is a more profitable strategy for dairy farmers than selection based on phenotypes for SFA/UFA ratio.

Association of PIT1 Gene with Milk Fat Percentage in Holstein Cattle

The pituitary-specific transcription factor (PIT1) gene is responsible for pituitary development and hormone secreting gene expression in mammals. PIT-1 is studied as a candidate genetic marker for growth, carcass and also for milk yield traits. In dairy farm animals, the principal goal of the selection is the improvement of milk yield and composition. The genes of milk proteins and hormones ar...

بررسی اثر ناسازگاری ماتریس های واریانس- کواریانس در شاخص انتخاب

In selection index procedure, phenotype and genetic (co)variance matrices of traits are used for calculating different genetic parameters like index coefficients, index variance, genetic gain in selection goal and selection accuracy. Sometimes, it is possible that these matrices become inconsistent or they are not positive, nor definite. In the current study, for investigation of the effect of ...

Estimates of Repeatability and Heritability of Productive Trait in Holstein Dairy Cattle

Dairy cattle breeding programs have been based in the selection for traits related to milk production. In this research a data set of 63 herds of East Azerbaijan province Holstein cattle, collected during 2002-2013 by the Iranian Animal Breeding Center was used to estimate the repeatability and heritability of three traits of economic importance. Genetic parameters for first three lactations of...

Genetic and Phenotypic Parameters for Milk Production Traits in the First and Second Lactation in Romanian Simmental Dairy Cows

The aim of the present study was to estimate genetic and phenotypic parameters of milk production traits in the first and second lactations of Romanian Simmental dairy cattle. For the estimation of variance, heritability, genetic and phenotypic correlations among milk yield, fat yield, protein yield, and percentages of fat and protein, 3400 first and second lactation records over a period of fi...
